Glasses are a common solution for presbyopia treatment. There are various options. You could choose reading glasses, which are made to provide clear vision, but only for near distances. If you wear them for other distances, however, your vision might be blurred or out of focus. The intermediate distance, which is generally the distance a computer screen sits, will not be as clear. Choosing reading glasses can result in frequently taking them off and putting them on.

Another presbyopia treatment option is multifocal glasses, which are more convenient since you can keep them on all day. Even if you don’t have a prescription for distance, you can still wear these.

If you prefer to only wear glasses when reading and using the computer, then computer glasses might be an option for you. Like multifocal glasses, these give you clear vision at several distances, but only at reading distance and intermediate distance, so you might experience blurred vision when looking at an object in the far distance.

Multifocal contact lenses are another option for presbyopia treatment. There are various types to fit your needs and your ocular health. The optometrist will advise you based on your input and your eye examination.

There may also be an option to go for monovision contact lenses. Unlike multifocal ones, the strength of your contact lenses will not vary. You will have one contact lens fitted with your distant prescription and the other with your reading prescription. Depending on your prescription, this may or may not be the best presbyopia treatment solution for you. Your optometrist will give you advice based on your ocular health and your individual lifestyle needs.

Laser eye surgery

Laser eye surgery for presbyopia correction is controversial. Because presbyopia is not caused by a misshapen lens, it is not as straightforward to fix with surgery as myopia or hypermetropia. However, some surgeons offer it. Speak to your optometrist for advice on whether it could be an option for you.
