Celebrating Royal eyewear style

This year our Queen and longest ever serving monarch turned 90 years old. Her official birthday will be celebrated on the 11th of June and marked by her annual birthday parade – Trooping the Colour. To celebrate this momentous occasion we’re looking to the royals and their timeless style for our eyewear inspiration this summer.

Queen Elizabeth II

Her Majesty has become known for her classic and polished sense of style, favouring her tried and true staples of skirt suits, pearls, block colours and headscarves. When it comes to eyewear she also likes to keep things simple. The Queen has been wearing Silhouette frames since 1982 and generally opts for pairs with rounded lenses and a clean, vintage style look.

Her current pair are made from a lightweight, semi-transparent plastic and are the perfect mix between a very classic style that will work with anything and yet also reflect her personality a little too. They frame her eyes perfectly, but without the harsh lines and appearance that metal or solid plastic frames can often have, especially on older wearers.

These plastic frames from Seen have a very similar look but offer a slightly more modern take on this style. Their multicoloured brown and purple speckled print adds a little splash of colour and extra interest whilst still remaining very classic.

Prince William

It’s well known that William loves sports and is also a keen skier, so it’s no surprise that he is a fan of Oakley’s sporty wrap around sunglasses. Blending performance with style, the brand’s go anywhere, do anything sunglasses are perfect for a Prince with a hectic and varied schedule.

When it comes to glasses, William prefers a more minimal look with simple metal rimmed rectangular frames. These are a good choice for people who like a very paired back, smart look which is ideal for both everyday wear and more formal events.

Minimal doesn’t have to mean boring though, these frames from Julius keep the smart look but with a fashion forward edge. The textured metal brow bar is sleek and modern, giving a more defined look to the face.

Duchess of Cambridge

Kate is often spotted matching her effortlessly stylish wardrobe with a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Whether that’s sitting courtside at Wimbledon, on a royal tour or relaxing on a family holiday, the Wayfarer works beautifully for every occasion. A true eyewear staple, they are the perfect compliment for the Duchess’s elegant yet modern style and help to lend an easygoing cool to her outfits.

Though Kate doesn’t wear glasses herself, if she did we could imagine her picking out a pair similar to these Fifth Avenue frames. The subtle tortoiseshell colouring would work perfectly against her complexion and the classic shape is reminiscent of her favourite wayfarers.

Prince Harry

Much like the other royals, Harry also likes to stick to very classic styles. The younger Prince is a fan of both Oakley and Ray-Ban as well, but instead preferring their semi-rimless and aviator shapes. These silhouettes work very well with his more laid back and casual preppy style, and keep his look simple and timeless.

Seen’s take on the aviator comes in a gunmetal colourway with matching grey smoke lenses, making for a truly classic look.
